Should I Have Facial Hair In My Headshot?

Facial hair is quite popular at the moment, everything from full beards to designer stubble can commonly be seen on the streets of our cities. However there s a couple of things to consider when thinking about having facial hair in your headshot, to beard or not to beard or is moustache the question . Headshots are about creating the right first impression and facial hair can occasionally give the wrong type of impression, it can alter people s perception of you when looking at your headshot. You may not have considered how facial hair can alter people s perceptions but here s a few things to think about. There are some significant psychological influences about a man with a beard against a clean shaven man. More often than not a beard will make a man look older. For instance, adolescent boys don’t need psychologists to tell them that growing some stubble could help them look more mature, but it also turns out the ageing effects of a beard don’t disappear as you get older. Should I Smile in my Actors Headshot?

Should I smile in my headshot? Are you a smiley person? Do you like to smile? Do you like your teeth? These are just a few of the things to think about when you ask the question should I smile in my headshot? Starting at the beginning I don t think it s essential to have a smile to make a great actors headshot. Think of the types of character you are likely to be cast as and does your face/look suit the roles you are applying for? Are those the kind of roles where you be expected to smile a lot i.e. the nice girl next door or perhaps a genial Doctor for instance. If you understand your casting then you should be aware of those points and also understand whether or not you need a headshot with a smile. Headshots in London There is of course another thing to consider, the difference between a commercial headshot and a theatrical headshot. One is used mainly to promote and sell things and the other is used mainly to represent the characteristics of an actor.  Normally the commercial h

Headshot Questions Answered

Actors Headshot Answers What Should I Wear? This is the question I get asked most of all and often it s the easiest to answer. Wear something simple and plain for the best results, the idea is to wear something that won t distract the eye of the viewer away from your face. If you think about it logically, a great headshot is all about your face and not what you are wearing, it s about creating a great first impression and grabbing the attention of the Casting Director or Agent. If for instance you were to wear something that has bold black & white stripes then those stripes will catch the eye of the viewer and draw their attention down to them instead of focusing their attention on your face. Likewise if you are wearing something that has a strong pattern this can also draw the eye of the viewer away from your face. Another thing to consider when choosing what to wear is how it will look in B&W. Currently it s standard to use a colour headshot but often your headshot will be reproduce

Actors headshots – tips and advice from the experts!

I was asked by the guys CastNet to answer the most common questions actors have headshots. I love to have a consultation with my clients before they book a session as it not only helps break the ice but also helps to allay the fears of the dreaded headshot session The thing is, with a bit of preparation and forethought the session can go so much easier and crucially have much better results. There were two other well-known headshot photographers asked at the same time as me and it s good to know that hey both pretty much said the same as me. It s worth checking out as there are some useful its of information.

Is This The Future of Headshots Photography – I Think Not

I saw this article today in the LA Magazine about a team of actors turned headshot photographers (you know my thoughts on this). It sounds like a crazy idea but in the city of LA anything goes. In all seriousness is it a good idea? Well there are a couple of things that make me question its feasability, I know it s a big truck but it s still a small studio that has lots of limitations on lighting and space (distance from the background). Also is there a set style that all of the actors turned headshot photographers shoot in or is it pot luck on who s available on the day? The other thing that caugt my attention was the fact that this statement was made Although the Headshot Truck’s target clients are, per Hendershott, actors “from Arkansas who may not know any better” and that kind of makes me feel uneasy. I wrote about ethics in the headshot industry yesterday and this statement kind of harps back to that. I understand that they are pitching themselves at the lower end of the h

Acting Scams and Headshot Scams

In every business there are inscrutable characters, sharks who prey on the unsuspecting or desperate. The acting industry is no difference with dubious Agents, Managers and of course photographers. there are the classic pop up agencies that promise the world and deliver nothing but a huge upfront cost, and there are photographers in on this too usually affiliated to the agency, especially model agancies. However there is another type of photographer that perhaps unwittingly scam or perhaps mis-advise clients by taking aspiring actos money and deliver headshots that are totally unsuitable for the industry. I am passionate about being an actors headshot photographer and have been at the forefront of my field for over 20 years. One of the best bits about doing my job is seeing people move on to the next level of their career with the help of my headshots. The other is offering impartial advice to my clients about the industry, especially new clients who ofetn have no knowledge other than

Exercise is The Food of Life – Dockside Fitness

This short video is of my good friend and training partner Mark Finn from Dockside Fitness. I train with Mark outside in Ropemakers Field E14 mostt mornings at 7am and on a Sunday at 9am. I often see and hear about functional fitness and wondered what it was. I used to think that lifting weights and doing a few sit ups along with a session or two on a spin bike was enough to keep me healthy and fit. After training with Mark for a while I grew to understand that functional fitness is about being able to deal with the surprises life can sometimes unexpectedly throw at you such as having to lift a heavy item or move quickly to get out of danger. I think its incredibly important to be fit for purpose and as an actor that includes being ready for anything or as they say in Latin. Utrinque Paratus it s the motto of the Parachute Regiment (I used to be involved in as a Territorial soldier many many years ago) the motto means ready for Anything and this has been one of those tenets that has st

Apple’s New Advert & Actors Headshots

Apple s New Advert & Actors Headshots This short video by director Jake Scott, son of the mightly talented Ridley Scott is celebrating 30 years of Apple innovation. The really great thig is that it was all shot n the iphone 5s with its cracking HD camera facility. The temptation for an actor could be to have a headshot taken on an iphone don t would be my advice. There are those among you I hear say of course you would you re a headshot photographer. But seriously guys my intention is to be honest and pass on my knowledge, one of the big things I say is don t take a chance with your career you might only get one chance to make the right impression. These photos can look great on the small screen but as soon as they are blown up to a normal size the quality starts to show. The other and more important aspect of using a mobile phone camera is the lens. They are wide angle and they are great for taking landscapes and group shots etc. but when taking a headshot which needs to be fairly cl

Preparing For Your Audition

Quite possibly two of the most stressful times for an actor are the headshot session and the audition. Every actor knows how important it is to have a killer headshot and often when actors come to my studio for new headshots I can feel the pressure they are putting themselves under to get a great headshot.
